From Amsterdam to Sydney.
And from practical to smart and stylish.

“How can I move this pendant light without having to drill holes in the ceiling again?” Paul Constandse wonders loudly, staring at the hanging lamp above his kitchen table. Then he got it … Since then, his life will never be the same.

The story of the Lightswing

We’re taking you to 2006. Paul and his wife bought a new house in Leeuwarden. If Paul hangs up the pendant lamp, his wife suddenly decides to change the position of the table by giving it a quarter turn. Yes, the table looks so much better in the room. But the new pendant light suddenly lost its good position …
“My boy, as an inventor you only need one good idea …”

Paul stares at the ceiling and thinks about his grandfather. He once said to him: “Boy, as an inventor you just need one good idea …” Paul realizes that this is the moment. It should be a new suspension system , that makes your interior flexible.

Paul immediately goes into his shed and did not get out for a long time. In the end, he made a first prototype. Awkward and heavy and still miles away from the current Lightswing. But the beginning is there! And most importantly, his wife is also enthusiastic.

In the months that follow Paul works on his invention. He creates a website, a Facebook page and: orders! Paul realizes, he needs an investor, so he talks about his invention with banks and an electronics giant. He gets good proposals, but declines them; it just did not feel right.

And now what to do? Paul does not have a clue.

Until Christmas diner in 2014. During the main course his sister in law suggests to talk to John, a friend who is investor. Soon after Christmas the deal is made. Also a marketeer joins them as well as a product developer. The technology should be even smarter and the design even more sophisticated.

Yes! The Lightswing is also popular with designers.

The first important success is the VT Wonen Lamp & Design Fair, which is a direct hit. People are curious and enthusiastic. Yes! The Lightswing also appeals to designers. A visitor advises to develop besides the Single version also the Twin, a model for two hanging lamps.

The Lightswing now makes thousands of interiors more flexible and attractive, from Leeuwarden till Sydney. And every day the lightswing is “discovered” by interior lovers from all over the world.

We’re taking you to 2006. Paul and his wife bought a house in a new modern neighborhood in Leeuwarden. They wanted clean, white walls and ceilings and stylishly decoration. The beautiful pendant lamp they bought would give the kitchen the coziness they were looking for.

Paul promises his wife to hang up the lamp. With its electro-technical background, this must be children’s work. He works vigorously: drilling holes, wires and connecting the lamp to the central box .. Yes, it works. Lovely light in the house!

Till there, no problems.

But than his wife comes home.

“My boy, as an inventor you only need one good idea …”

She looks, looks again, then decides to change the position of the table by giving it a quarter turn. Paul can only agree: the table looks so much better in the room. But the new pendant light suddenly lost its good position …

Paul sits down, leans back, stares at the ceiling and thinks about the situation. Suddenly he thinks of his grandfather, an enterprising man. He once said to him: “Boy, as an inventor you just need one good idea …” Paul realizes that “the idea” his grandfather talked about can now be the solution to this situation. Something new! You drill too many holes, a lot of frustration and discussions after with your partner can occur. Above all it should be the invention that makes your interior flexible. This needs to be considered….

Paul immediately goes into his shed and did not get out for a long time. In the end, he made a first prototype of a wooden board, a rubber band, a pulley, a C-profile and cords. The prototype was made. Very awkward and heavy and still miles from the current Lightswing. But the beginning is there! And most importantly, his wife is also enthusiastic.

In the following months Paul works on the prototype for the “Light rod” like his invention was called at the time. In the meantime, he’s making a website and a Facebook page. He is so surprised: there are orders coming in! So back to work! He quickly takes care of 100 pieces of all parts. And with every order he dives into his shed. “Then we tinkered,” thinks Paul back. “Actually crazy work, but a lot of fun.”

Still miles away, which will later become a very popular object for the interior.

Paul realizes that he needs an investor to further develop his inventive hanging system for lamps. Literally and figuratively. He successfully registers a patent and registers his invention patent with banks and the largest electronics manufacturer in the Netherlands. Everyone comes with an offer. But Paul is so stubborn that he rejects them one by one. “I had to keep too much distance from my invention” which I refused.

And now what? Paul has no idea until Christmas 2014.

During the family Christmas dinner, Paul talks about his plans and the dead end they are in. His savings are gone, but his motivation is far from over. But yes, he realizes, no production of his invention without money.

Then the help comes from an unexpected source.

During the main course, his sister-in-law suggests talking to John. He is her friend and he also an investor. She said to inform John about Paul’s invention immediately after Christmas. John is thrilled and decides to call Paul immediately. Shortly afterwards they meet at the famous kitchen table by Paul, the place where the first production of the Lightswing started.

The collaboration starts immediately. Also an experienced product developer joints in. They both think the technology should be even smarter and the design even more sophisticated. A marketer needs to make sure that the whole world gets familiar with this ingenious suspension system. Since the Lightswing now has international ambitions, the Lightswing is now called officially “Lightswing”.

Yes! The Lightswing is also popular with designers.

The first important success is the VT Wonen Lamp & Design Fair, which is a direct hit. The 12 meter long by 6m wide stand with only Lightswings gets a lot of attention. People are curious and enthusiastic. Yes! The Lightswing also appeals to designers. The feedback Lightswing receives inspires to make the Lightswing even more perfect. A leveling foot was designed, so that the Lightswing can always be placed directly on the ceiling and the twin version is born.

From that moment, the Lightswing has two models: the single one for 1 pendant lamp and the twin version for 2 hanging lamps.

The Lightswing now makes thousands of interiors more flexible and attractive. From the Netherlands to Brazil and from Iceland to Australia. And every day it is “discovered” by interior lovers from all over the world. “If the Lightswing was human, it would be a smart, reliable and stylish woman,” said Paul, who was sitting at his kitchen table. The place where it all started. “Proud? No, I’m not like that. But I’m so happy with her!
